May 20 | Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

Highlighting the richness of the world’s cultures

Cultural Diversity GraphicFor this week’s spotlight, we want to take a moment to recognize an important day that will occur tomorrow, Saturday, May 21. This day is known as World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development and is intended to highlight the richness of the world’s cultures and the essential role of creating an intercultural dialogue for a fulfilling life.

Coincidentally, this Saturday will also mark the launching of a unique, multicultural event here at San Diego Oasis. From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, older adults will gather inside the new Cox Tech Tank in the Lifelong Learning Center for free One-on-One technology learning sessions in multiple languages. For the first time at Oasis, people who speak English, Vietnamese, Spanish, or Amharic will be able to come together and learn in the same space.

Our society has viewed diversity as a hindrance rather than an asset for so long. Language barriers were seen as impenetrable, and learning the norms and practices of other cultures was viewed as overwhelming and impossible. With the help of our incredibly diverse community in San Diego, we created cross-cultural dialogues to overcome these challenges so that people can learn together despite their differences. What an incredible way to appreciate and acknowledge Cultural Diversity for Dialogue Development!
