We’re Launching a New Project

Library in Oasis LobbyDiversify Our Library: Call for Book Donations

Dear San Diego Oasis Participants,

This week, we are excited to announce a project that we will be embarking on. Throughout the course of this year, we will begin the process of diversifying our library. Each month, we will have a call for book donations that corresponds with the monthly, diversity celebrations as a way to promote education, awareness, and understanding around these important cultural acknowledgments.

Oftentimes, we understate the importance of accessibility and affordability when it comes to books. Many readers do not have the luxury of accessing diverse options for themselves. This can be due to a number of factors, including limited book selections at local libraries, systemic and individual biases that lead to less diverse options, and high prices. This is particularly troubling when considering that reading can be a critical way to expose one’s self to different cultu Save res, backgrounds, ideas, and experiences.

This is why the San Diego Oasis library is an incredible tool to promote diverse reading selections. Our library is free, accessible, and open to any book donations you may have. We would greatly appreciate any and all contributions.

For this month’s theme, we would like to begin with Disability Pride Month, a month dedicated to destigmatizing disabilities and celebrating folks who have disabilities. In honor of Disability Pride Month, we would like to offer space for you to bring in your favorite books that elevate people with disabilities, call for disability justice, and challenge ableism through reading. These books can range from fictional stories, to nonfictional histories, memoirs, and more.

Thank you so much for your contributions! We look forward to reading and learning with you.

Warmly,
