Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist, UCSD School of Medicine (ret)
Since Dr. Phil Goscienski, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist, retired from active practice and the clinical faculty at the UCSD School of Medicine he has written and lectured on matters of health and fitness. He has applied his interests in nutrition, exercise, medical history, and paleopathology to develop more than 75 PowerPoint presentations that he has shared with OASIS members for more than 15 years. His presentation on the health benefits of wine and chocolate is the most often requested, followed by descriptions of medical practice in ancient Egypt and during the Renaissance and the California Gold rush. He explains why conditions such as coronary artery disease, cancer, stroke, dementia, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis are related to lifestyle, not aging, and how they can be avoided or delayed. As the author of more than 700 newspaper, magazine and medical journal articles and four books he is also an instructor in CPR and the Stop the Bleed program.
